This is a question that I have been asking myself over the past few years…….. Ever since Harrison’s passing in April of 2011 Melissa and I have been committed to honoring him by paying forward the love and compassion that we so generously received from friends, family and strangers around the world.
Our vision is to “fill the gaps” for the children with critical needs by drawing upon our experiences and challenges of caring for Harrison. We felt we could add the most value by standing for these families exactly where they are. If they needed help to hire in home nursing care then that is what we would do. If they needed help paying their bills then that is what we would do.
We believe that we could make the most significant impact by helping where insurance and other resources fall short.
How Do We Successfully Run A Non-Profit?
During Harrison’s time with us we were constantly receiving love and support in many different shapes and sizes. From heart felt Facebook posts, to gift packages in the mail, to donations of all types, there was not a week that went by that we did not receive some type of donation. These gifts and support appeared because people were inspired to help and cared about Harrison and our family.
Fast forward to today. Our focus has shifted from helping Harrison to helping other families. Melissa and I are learning what it takes to successfully operate a real non-profit enterprise. We have no official training just our vision and commitment to make the world a better place in honor of Harrison.
Asking For Help Is Not So Easy
Often times I find myself cautious about asking for help. Instead of calling someone up and asking for their support I may just send and email or Facebook post instead. The requirement of asking for help is bringing me face to face with my insecurities, fears and doubts.
But at the end of the day my desire to make Hope From Harrison a success will hopefully push me through my fears to a point where I am comfortable asking my community for the help we need.
Hope From Harrison Today
Today I would say that Hope From Harrison is a work in progress. I would say that Hope From Harrison has been successful helping other families and is motivated to continue to grow and provide more help. I would say that most of all Hope From Harrison is an amazing group of people who believe in what we stand for and are always be our side whenever we ask for their support.
With Love & Gratitude,
Matt Hudson
